The CGIF was pleased to offer 13 students, both domestic and international, travel grants of $1,000 each to attend the European Ceramic Society’s (ECerS) Summer School on high and ultra-high temperature ceramics in Turin, Italy, June 14 and 15, 2019.
The summer school program took place prior to the 16th Conference of the European Ceramic Society (ECerS), at Politecnico di Torino. The aim of the annual summer school is to create a forum that brings together students, professors, and industrialists from the high and ultra-high temperature ceramics field in order to develop links and a common language for better research and technological innovations, to define key challenges, and discuss questions to move toward effective solutions.
According to program participant Lavina Backman, a PhD candidate at the University of Virginia, “The topics covered ranged from ultra-refractories to thermo-structural composites, and covered thermochemical and thermomechanical behavior of these materials at high and ultra-high temperatures.” Backman added, “Of particular interest to me were the presentations and discussions of new materials, as well as techniques currently being used to study these types of materials. The summer school organizers further added a tour of the old Fiat Factory building, providing a fantastic historical background behind the building in which we attended the summer school lectures.”
Among the topics discussed were:
· Thermodynamics: phase diagram and chemical reaction
· Reactivity and corrosion of refractories by liquid and gas
· Reactivity and corrosion of ceramic matrix composites
· Design, characteristics, applications, and degradation of high and ultra- high temperature ceramics
