Last month, future young innovators from around the country came together in order to bring their visions of sustainability to life. Future City is a STEM competition created by nonprofit DiscoverE for middle school students to create a sustainable city of the future. First, the teams compete at a local level and then the winners move on to a national level.
The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) and the Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation (CGIF) sponsor two awards at the national level, one for best use of ceramics and one for best use of glass.
The competition took place in person on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at the HYATT Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. ACerS/CGIF provided six volunteers to oversee and judge the finalists. 41 teams made it to finals and had the opportunity to speak with each of the judges about their work.
The Best Use of Glass in Technology and for Sustainability was awarded to four students from St. Clair Jr High School, Missouri, led by educator Jennifer Hawkins. The winner announcement can be found here.
The Best Use of Ceramics in Technology and for Sustainability was awarded to nine students from Stratford Middle School, California, led by educator Aarthi Janakiraman and mentor Neha Makhijani. Their winner announcement can be found here.
The CGIF is proud to sponsor and support the young innovators who will lead our future. To learn more about the Future City competition and view the celebration, click here.
