The Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation was pleased to welcome U.S. and international students who participated in the 2020 Winter Workshop, which took place Friday, January 24 through Tuesday, January 28, at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The workshop provided a combination of technical and professional development sessions, outstanding networking opportunities, and included a tour of the Kennedy Space Center. The annual event is designed for ceramic and glass students and young professionals from around the world. This year, the European Ceramic Society provided 16 travel grants for European students, and a total of 53 students in all participated in the event.  Dr. Francis Cambier and Dr. Anne Leriche of the European Ceramic Society were on hand to welcome the students.

The Saturday morning sessions of Winter Workshop featured various experts who delivered the following lectures:

Dr. Jared Weaver, GE Global Research: “CMCs and EBCs at GE: From Laboratory Experiments to Industrialization”

Dr. Giorgia Franchin, University of Padova: “Additive Manufacturing of Ceramics: strategies, technologies and applications”

Dr. William Fahrenholtz, Missouri S&T University: “Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics for Extreme Environments”

Dr. Romain Gaume, University of Central Florida: “Crystal-field engineering for materials scientists: an important tool in the design of phosphors, lasers, and scintillators”

Dr. Geoff Brennecka, Colorado School of Mines: “Fund Yourself! Strategies for Proposal Writing for Graduate Fellowships and Beyond”

Dr. Theresa Davey, Tohoku University: “Professional skills for navigating global environments”

Dr. Jessica Krogstad, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign: “The Value of Being Yourself: How embracing diversity can benefit creativity, productivity and culture in the scientific community”

Next year’s Winter Workshop will take place in Daytona Beach, FL, January 22 – 26, 2021, in conjunction with the 45th International Conference and Expo on Advanced Ceramics and Composites (ICACC2021).
