On Saturday November 5, 2022, CGIF hosted their final teacher training workshop of the 2022 season in Cleveland, OH with our partners Education Projects. The workshops named “Crystals, Candy & Clinker: Linking everyday materials to cutting-edge science” aim to educate K-12 teachers about how to integrate materials science education into their classrooms and educate them about careers in materials science.
This year, we hosted four in-person workshops across Ohio in Columbus, Toledo, Cincinnati, and Cleveland plus one virtual workshop. Each workshop lasted 7 hours, and educators worked through each of the nine lessons in CGIF’s Materials Science Classroom Kit and learned how each lesson aligns with Ohio’s Standards of Learning. In addition, teachers got the opportunity to network with each other and professionals in the ceramic and glass industry at an industry luncheon. At the conclusion of the day, all the teachers were granted continuing education units.
For the 2022 season, our workshops trained 99 middle and high school teachers, and teachers who attended our workshop had a lot to say!
“I’ve learned and gained so much information from the peer tutoring and the other participants who’s attended. I’ve learned a lot of information about opportunities for my future professional development and how that can be passed down to my kids.”
— Janet Pennington, Reedsville OH
“This gives students more choices when choosing a career. These materials help them see this isn’t just a subject, but something with real world applications.”
— Erin Molden, Kettering, OH
“The Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation kit contains many items either not easily obtained through everyday teacher sources, like the Refractory Brick, and other very handy items even a non-laboratory science (elementary or middle) teacher can use right away, or to start building their repertoire.”
— Darren Greschuk, Columbus, OH
Thank you to our generous sponsors who helped make these events possible: O-I, Saint-Gobain NorPro, & Belden Brick.
