On October 12, 2022, CGIF launched its newest program GLOW (Glass Learning Opportunities Workshop) at the Pittsburgh Glass Center. The program hosts middle and high school students to learn about the science behind the art of glass blowing.
This GLOW event hosted 95 students from Pittsburgh Obama 6-12, a public school in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The event featured three demonstrations: (1) Hot glass blowing, (2) neon glass bending, and (3) breaking glasses from tempered glass to Prince Rupert’s drops. Additionally, every teacher was given a Glass Science Kit and information about careers in the glass sciences to extend their learning past their trip to the Pittsburgh Glass Center.
We want to extend a special thank you to Dr. Doris Möncke and the graduate students from Alfred University that demonstrated the breaking glass demos in a safe and fun environment. The PCSA Education Committee Chair Nathan McIlwaine served as an excellent event photographer! We also want to thank Dr. B. Reeja Jayan for her help in coordinating this event and to the additional Carnegie Mellon University staff and student volunteers who helped make this day a huge success!
This event will be featured in one of CGIF’s upcoming Outreach in a Box series, so stay tuned if you’d like to learn more about how to bring this event to a glass center near you!
If you want to support programs that expand glass science education, please consider making a donation or volunteering at our next event!
