Applications are due by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on Thursday, December 3, 2026. This application has four sections and we expect it will take two to three hours to complete well. We strongly recommend downloading the drafting worksheet first, writing your answers there, and pasting them in when you are ready. Every question and word limit appears in the worksheet. You may also use "Save and finish later" at the bottom of any page. Gravity Forms will email you a link to return to your partly completed application. Keep that email, because it is the only way back in. You will need two documents to finish: a resume or CV, and a one to two page Project Summary with technical data supporting your proof of concept. You may also attach up to five optional files, such as letters of support, additional figures, publications, or patent information. Those are not required and an application is complete without them.

The next four questions are about you. Draft your answers in the worksheet before pasting them here.
400 words maximum. Why are you applying to the Orton Materials Technology Residency, and why are you personally committed to advancing this technology? Explain how the idea originated, your individual role in developing it, and which parts of the work you have personally completed or led. Then describe one significant obstacle, failure, or unexpected result you encountered while working on this or another difficult project: what you did, what happened, and what you learned.
350 words maximum. Describe the academic preparation, laboratory or manufacturing experience, technical skills, and prior accomplishments that prepare you to execute the proposed project. Identify the techniques, equipment, analytical methods, software, fabrication processes, or other capabilities most relevant to the work, and how you have applied them to solve technical problems. For team or laboratory accomplishments, clearly explain your individual responsibilities and contributions.
400 words maximum. Describe a situation in which you recognized an opportunity, took initiative without being directed, or moved a team or project forward. Then describe your entrepreneurial thinking about the proposed technology: who you believe would use or benefit from it, how you have thought about its path to commercialization, and what you have already done to explore those questions (customer conversations, competitive research, prototype demonstrations, business-plan work, or similar).
150 words maximum. Explain your proposed technology and its potential value to an intelligent reader who does not have a technical background in ceramics, glass, or materials science. Avoid unexplained technical terminology.
Describe the technology and its current stage of development. This question has four parts.
Q4a. Current development stage(Required)
The residency is intended for technologies at or near proof of concept. A 10 to 12 week residency is generally not long enough to move a project meaningfully forward from basic or applied research.
Describe the technology and the evidence behind its current stage. Your response should address: 1. What technical function, material property, process, or system has already been demonstrated. 2. The evidence supporting the current stage: data, testing, prototypes, models, customer feedback, or other validation. 3. What remains uncertain or unproven. 4. The two most significant technical or execution risks and how you would adjust the project if one of those risks occurs. 5. What materials, samples, data, permissions, or preparatory work must be available before the residency begins.

300 words maximum. Which Orton facilities, technical capabilities, testing resources, manufacturing resources, staff expertise, or industry connections would be most valuable to your project? Explain how each identified resource would support a specific project objective or deliverable. Explain why Orton is the right environment to advance this work at this stage of its development. Identify any outside equipment, specialists, or partners that may also be required.

Based on what you currently know, explain the intellectual property and institutional status of the technology, any unresolved questions, and the steps needed before work could begin at Orton. Then describe the commercialization pathway you currently consider most plausible, such as licensing, formation of a startup, partnership with an established company, internal product development, or another approach.
250 words maximum. What specific technical problem, customer need, or application opportunity does this technology address? Identify the most likely first user, customer, or application, and describe how the problem is currently addressed. What evidence suggests that the need is meaningful (published research, industry feedback, customer conversations, cost or performance data, regulatory requirements, or other information)? Explain the principal advantage of your approach and the potential commercial, industrial, environmental, or societal impact if it succeeds.

Guidance for the Project Summary: This is where you show your evidence. Do not restate your answers from the application. Embed figures, plots, photographs, or tables directly. Include: - A brief description of the technology and what it does - The data, figures, test results, or images that support your proof of concept, with captions - The measurement methods and conditions behind that data - Baseline performance metrics established to date Optional Up to five additional files.
