Volunteer for GLOW 2026
Help Students Discover the World of Materials Science
Join the Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation (CGIF) for the Glass Learning Opportunities Workshop (GLOW) 2026, an interactive student outreach workshop taking place during MS&T 2026 at the Pittsburgh Glass Center.
GLOW brings middle and high school students together for a hands-on introduction to materials science, ceramics, glass, manufacturing, and engineering careers. Students will rotate through live hot glass demonstrations, hands-on materials demonstrations, and an engaging career panel.
We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help make the experience a success!

Volunteer Schedule
Volunteers should plan to arrive by 8:30 AM for orientation and setup.
- 8:30–9:00 AM: Volunteer check-in, orientation, and setup
- 9:30–9:40 AM: Student arrival and check-in
- 9:40 AM–12:00 PM: Student rotations
- 12:00–12:30 PM: Student departure and cleanup
- 1:00–2:30 PM: Volunteer appreciation lunch at Moonlit Burgers
What Will Volunteers Do?
There are several ways to get involved with GLOW! Volunteers may serve as student group guides, career panelists, or demonstration assistants.
Student Rotations
The Pittsburgh Glass Center is a large, three-story facility. To make the most of the space, this event is spread across the 2nd and 3rd floors. Escorted by volunteers, middle and high school students will be divided into groups of 30-40 students each and rotate through three interactive experiences throughout the morning. Each group will visit all three parts of the program, giving students the opportunity to explore different aspects of the workshop that highlight glass science.
- Hot Shop
Students will experience live glass demonstrations and learn more about glassmaking and the science behind the materials. - Materials Demonstrations
Students will explore hands-on materials science demonstrations and discover how materials behave and why their properties matter. - Career & Education Panel
Students will hear from professionals about their education, career paths, and experiences in materials science, engineering, ceramics, glass, and related fields.
Each activity will last approximately 40 minutes, with a short transition period between rotations. The full student program runs from 9:30 AM–12:00 PM.
You don't need to be a materials science expert to volunteer!
Our volunteers' primary role is to help students navigate the event safely and have a great experience.
