The Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation (CGIF) showcased the exciting possibilities of the subject of materials science during the sixth annual COSI Big Science Celebration, which was held on Saturday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This spectacular event marked the end of the COSI Science Festival, which had taken place earlier that week.
The Big Science Celebration hosted booths for nonprofits, community partners, local businesses, and educational institutions. There were other well-known booths such as Google, Honda, iHeartMedia, the U.S. Air Force, and others. With more than 100 vendor stations at the event, children, families, and teachers were able to participate in the hands-on experience, which is widely recognized as the largest STEM event in Ohio. A wide range of STEAM fields, including genetics, biology, automobile engineering, robotics, pharmacy, and many more were available for visitors to interact with.
Owens Corning, one of the biggest producers of glass fiber for composites and building materials worldwide, provided support for the CGIF’s fiberglass and fiber optics-themed booth, as well as two volunteers who helped discuss the science behind fiberglass. In addition, CGIF’s interactive booth was led by four members of the Education Committee.
During the festivities, CGIF showcased a range of real applications of fiberglass and fiber optics that participants could touch and observe, as well as demonstrated the Candy Fiber Pull lesson, which uses melted-down hard candy to show the formation of thin glass fibers.
Owen’s Corning also provided samples of fiberglass insulation, which helped students comprehend the complex science behind the fiber manufacturing process. This example was excellent for families and future scientists to help visualize real-world examples of fiberglass applications.
Thanks to Owens Corning’s sponsorship of the 2024 COSI Big Science Celebration as well as our four volunteers. CGIF continues to inspire the next generation of ceramic and glass professionals.
Our mission is to develop the next generation of professionals in the industries of ceramics and glass, and we are actively working to expand the field of materials science education.
