The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) and Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation (CGIF) sponsored a special award for Most Innovative Use of Ceramic or Glass at the 2024 Future City Finals.
Future City, organized by DiscoverE, is a competition for middle school students whose goal is to create a sustainable city of the future while applying math, science, and engineering concepts to their project.
The Future City Finals competition took place on February 18, 2024, and the Future City Final Awards took place on February 20, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. 42 teams from the regional competition advanced to Future City Finals.
ACerS and CGIF provided four special awards judges to oversee the final awards this year: Daniel Drury, Dr. Victoria Blair, Clare Sabata, and Avi Bergman. The Most Innovative Use of Ceramic or Glass was awarded to students at Colorado Academy, led by educator Jose Malagon and mentor Lora Koenig.
Students Jackson Hersch, Rahul Iyengar, Seelye Siderius, and more from their group presented their city, named Gradus Unum, which incorporated glass for energy storage.
ACerS and CGIF are grateful to our judges for lending their expertise to this event and are proud of all the young innovators who participated in this year’s Future City competition. Watch the full award ceremony here.
