Every year, the Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation (CGIF) aims to award a student with a $5,000 scholarship through the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). NSBE was founded in 1975 to encourage collegiate and pre-collegiate students in engineering and technology. NSBE currently has more than 6,000 chapters in the U.S. with more than 24,000 active members. The mission of NSBE is “to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”
The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) and the CGIF partnered in 2020 to create the Underrepresented Student Scholarship Fund to embrace diversity and break down racial barriers that exist within the materials science industry. The CGIF partnership with NSBE is designed to enhance the student experience and assist students in achieving their goals to become scientists and engineers.
Last year’s scholarship recipient, Devon Woodfine, is the perfect example of what motivates this partnership. Woodfine studies mechanical engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. As the head of his household, Woodfine was grateful to receive the CGIF scholarship and was able to pay off most of his tuition because of this contribution. Read more of Woodfine’s story here.
